Mami Origami (2019)

Origami Mami, directed by Marites Carino, speaks of transformation and the multi-layered, complex nature of being. Inspired by the intricate Japanese art of Origami, the dance-for-camera short echoes its geometry and its folding complexity. Choreographed and performed by Emmanuelle Lê Phan (Tentacle Tribe) and joined by dancers Victoria Mackenzie and Marie-Reine Kabasha, the trios movements evolve from sparse simplicity to extreme intricacy. Choreographed and performed by the conceptual hip-hop duo Tentacle Tribe (Emmanuelle Lê Phan and Elon Höglund), the short film explores the power of choice and one's imagination. The nomadic dance zigzags through Montreal streets and beyond to a score by Toronto’s Afiara Quartet and DJ Skratch Bastid. Screenings: March 18, 2016- Cinedans- Amsterdam, World premiere

Sucked into a choreographic time warp, viewers slowly realize things are not as they seem. Directed by filmmaker Marites Carino, Vanishing Points is a visual exploration of the power of momentary connection within an otherwise disconnected world. Set along the edges of a soon-to-be demolished triangular heritage building, two individuals inhabit separate spaces, dancing alone, yet unknowingly influencing one another. Vanishing Points is a site-specific dance-for-screen short choreographed by conceptual hip-hop dance duo Tentacle Tribe (Emmanuelle Lê Phan and Elon Höglund) who transpose break dancing concepts, usually explored in solo work, onto two bodies, which creates an unusual blend of acrobatic partnering. Set to an original score by composer Andrés Vial, the film subliminally perplexes viewers, and makes them think twice… AWARDS 1st Place, FIVER 1st Place Primera Convocatoria Internacional de Selección de Videodanza, Spain 1st Place, Utah Dance Film Festival Best Dance Short- Vida de Perro, Barcelona, Spain Golden Sheaf award- performing Arts, Yorkton Film Festival Golden Sheaf award- Best in Festival, Yorkton Film Festival International Winner, Video Moviemento, Columbia Golden Glovie Best in Show, Glovebox short film and animation festival, Boston Golden Glovie High Score Award in Dance, Glovebox short film and animation festival, Boston Audience Choice award, Utah Dance Film Festival Audience Favourite, LIFF Screendance Competition SCREENINGS (Partial List) 2015 May 22, Yorkton Film Festival, Yorkton, Saskatchewan, Canada May 18, De Montfort University, Leicester, Let’s Dance International Frontiers, UK May 14, Tees Film Festival, Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art, UK May, National Museum of Fine Arts, Taipei, Taiwan April 30, Newport Beach Film Festival, CA, USA April 29, Instituto Chihuahuense de Cultura, Mexico April 29, LDIF (Let's Dance International Frontiers), UK April 29, Screendance, Stockholm, Sweden April 29, Choreoscope, La Fundición, Bilbao, Spain April 25, Tiny Dance Film Festival, San Francisco April 25, VP screens- Tocht Festival of Dance, Kerry, Ireland April 19, WASP, Bucharest, Romania April 15, Havana Dance Film Festival, Cuba April 10, Mecal, Barcelona, Spain March 30, Clermont Ferrand, France March 24-29, FemCine4, Santiago, Chile March 23, 30, WASP, Bucharest, Romania March 22, Greensboro Dance Film Festival, NC March 19-22, Loikka, Helsinki, Finland February 27- IDN Festival, Barcelona, Spain February 22, Dance on Camera, University of Michigan, MI February 21, Les Rendez-Vous du Cinéma Québécois, Montreal, QC February 6-15, Victoria Film Festival, Victoria, Canada (Canadian Première) January 31, Dance on Camera, Lincoln Center, NY, NY January 31, Resident's Festival, Leeds, England January 31, Dance on Camera, Lincoln Center, NY, NY January 25 Glovebox Short Film & Animation Festival, Boston, USA January 23,25, Athens Video Dance Project, Athens, Greece January 2, Oklahoma Dance Film Festival, OK 2014 November- December, InShadow, Lisbon, Portugal November 29, idance Festival, Hong Kong, China November 26, Festival Video Danza Ecuador, Quito, Ecuador November 14-16, Dance Camera Istanbul, Turkey November 14, Container Festival, Brescia, Italy November 17, Leeds International Film Festival, UK November (11-16), Interfilm, Berlin, Germany November (11-13), 2014, Dance Media Japan, Saitama, Japan November (6-9), Light Moves Screendance Festival, Ireland November (6-9), Aesthetica Film Festival, York, UK November (6-9), San Francisco Dance Film Festival, USA October-November (23-5), Video Moviemento, Columbia October (9-12), Moving Futures, Amsterdam, Netherlands October (16-17), Choreoscope, Barcelona, Spain October (2 -12), Norrköping Film Festival Flimmer, Norrkoping, Sweden September-October, Sans Souci Festival of Dance Cinema, Boulder, CO, USA September- Quinzena de Dança de Almada, Portugal September - POOL 14 Internationale TanzFilmPlattform, Berlin, Germany August - Dança em Foco, Rio di Janero, Brazil August - HollyShorts, Los Angeles, USA July- Sao Carlos Video Dance Festival, Brazil Agite y Sirve and touring selection 2014-2015, Latin America June - International Screendance Festival, Durham, USA May- SinemaDansAnkara, Turkey March- Utah Dance Film Festival 2014- 2015-Cinedans & tour
